Girl Scouts Raise Awareness About Breast Cancer
Girl Scout Troop #1145 of Washington Township recently completed their work on the interest project "Women's Health" by distributing pink carnations, pink ribbons, and book marks listing information on Breast Cancer Awareness to women at their town football games. Thanks to two Girl Scout mothers and nurses, Roseanne Galvan RN of Pascack Valley Hospital and Rose Hrbek RN from Valley Home Care Valley Hospice, the girls were given lots of good advice on women's health issues.

GIRL SCOUTS CREATE AWARENESS ABOUT BREAST CANCER AT THE MEADOWLANDS 5K RUN/WALK AND INTERACTIVE HEALTH FAIR
The Girl Scout Council of Bergen County held its 5K Run/Walk & Interactive Health Fair on Sunday, October 22, 2006 at the Meadowlands Environment Center, 2 DeKorte Park Plaza, Lyndhurst, NJ.

There were three distinct event divisions:

  • Making Healthy Choices 5K Run a USTAF certified run with prizes for the top finishers beginning at 9:00a.m.
  • Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness Walk a scenic 1 mile or 5K walk through the Meadowlands celebrating breast cancer survivors and highlighting awareness for education and early detection beginning at noon.
  • Interactive Health Fair featuring educational displays and presentations from many of the area's major healthcare providers beginning at 10:00a.m.

The founder of Girl Scouting, Juliette Gordon Low, died at the age of 66 from breast cancer at a time when the words “breast” and “cancer” would not have been used in polite company. How times have changed. Today, the Girl Scout organization is seeking to raise public awareness of woman's health issues and other health issues relating to children such as nutrition, childhood obesity and diabetes. Assemblywoman Weinberg said about the event, “I am proud of the ambition of the Girl Scouts of Bergen County in organizing this three-part event…and I highly value the Girl Scouts' mission of promoting fitness, raising awareness of breast cancer and encouraging youths and adults alike to lead healthy lives.”

Girl Scouting provides girls with the knowledge and tools they need to develop healthy habits for life. Come out and run or walk for this great cause. All proceeds from the 5K Run/Walk will benefit healthy choice programs delivered to over 13,500 girls in Bergen County.
