WHAT IS GEOCACHING?
Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for GPS* users. (*Global Positioning System)  Participating in a cache hunt is a good way to take advantage of the wonderful features and capability of a GPS unit while enjoying the great outdoors.

Geocaching was started on May 3, 2000, just two days after the Clinton administration unscrambled GPS satellite signals that were previously used by the military. A few adventure lovers in Portland, Oregon quickly realized that this could be used for a game for those who love technology and the great outdoors.

The sport grew rapidly; geocaches can now be found in every state in the union, and in more than 200 countries around the world!

The pilot program covered all of the basics of GeoCaching including: safety in "the wild" and on the Internet, use of the GPS, creating a free account identity, navigating the GeoCaching website, locating caches in your area, Travel Bugs (and how to send one of your own on a journey) and the strategies and for a successful hunt!

GSUSA has created a brand new Interest Project Patch called "Hi-Tech Hide and Seek" and our program at GSCBC can help you earn this way-cool new IP!!

GSCBC received generous donations** from Kathi and Paul Viola @ Quantum Concepts, Inc., Barbara Grady, Carol Sprague, and the Organization of Chinese Americans- NJ Chapter, which will allow us to purchase the necessary equipment for this brand new program. Mr. Dave Brown from Modell's in Paramus also gave us a huge discount on the purchase of the backpacks for our GeoCaching Kits!

Learn about creating your own cache, Geomuggles, CITO, waypoints and coordinates and a host of other information to help you become a GeoGenius!!! Watch for this program to run again this summer- and in The Source for the 06-07 GS year!

**If you would like to donate so we can purchase additional units (for use at Council and at Camp Glen Spey), please contact Nancy Wieme.  The more GPS units we have, the more girls can learn about this fun, educational program!
