Learning about the respiratory system and how we breathe is the basis of the Asthma Awareness Program: Helping Girls Breathe Easier. Girls will develop knowledge of asthma triggers, making healthy choices such as avoiding cigarette smoke and eating healthy foods, and practicing relaxation techniques. By completing activities and earning the patch, girls can help create asthma awareness by reaching out to their community. Empowering girls to take charge of their health can lead to increased self-esteem and responsible decision-making. Click here to go to the GSUSA website for more links and information.
Program Books (as well as other Asthma resources) are available in our Resource Library or you can download the Asthma Awareness Program book containing patch activities for Girl Scouts of all age levels. Each age level contains objectives, activities complete with key points and materials needed, and Program Links to other Girl Scout awards.

This program was created by the Program Cluster (representing all 10 Councils in New Jersey) in collaboration with SEFAN. It is a state-wide necessary initiative because food pantries and soup kitchens are seeing dramatic increases in the number of people they serve while at the same time decrease in the donation of food. Some emergency food providers have to cut back on the amount of food they give out. These empty shelves turn away hungry people: working families who are still poor; the elderly and persons with disabilities on fixed incomes; the middle class, middle aged people who recently lost jobs; and immigrants. Requirements for the new Fighting Hunger in New Jersey Patch Program for all levels of Girl Scouts.
