  • Did you know that Lyme Disease gets its name from a town called Old Lyme Connecticut?
  • Lyme Disease was first discovered in this Connecticut town in 1975.
  • Lyme Disease is in Bergen County.  There are ONLY four states that have NOT found any cases of Lyme Disease.
  • WHAT IS LYME DISEASE... Read on to find out!

What is Lyme Disease?
Tell me about the tick that causes it!

Lyme Disease is an infection caused by the bite of a tick.
The tick has a life cycle that begins with hatching from eggs.
A tick is NOT an insect, but an Arachnid! (a group that includes spiders, mites, and scorpions.
The growing stages are:
  • Larval Stage- The ticks are tiny and flat.
  • Nymph Stage- Ticks grow to become a little larder than a period at the end of a sentence.
  • Adult Stage- Female ticks will lay eggs and the life cycle will begin again.

To help you understand the different life stages of a tick, and the SIZE of this arachnid, look at the picture below.  Notice the picture also show the eye of a needle.  This should give you an idea about the size of the tick.

Deer ticks in the larval, nymphal,
and adult stages.

More about Ticks...

The tick that carries Lyme Disease is much smaller than a dog tick. Ticks DO NOT jump or fly onto people.
A tick bite usually DOES Not hurt. Ticks wait on plants and grass and will cling to people as they pass by.
Not all ticks are infected with Lyme Disease. Ticks are parasites.  This means they need a host in order to live.

Where in the United States

Lyme Disease is called the "Great Imitator."

A person can have one or many symptoms.
A skin rash can also develop.  It may be itchy and warm to the touch.
It is important to know what NOT everyone will have the same symptoms.
Two people can react differently!

What should I do if I think I have a tick bite
or have Lyme Disease?
Talk with a parent or guardian and
tell this person how you are feeling.

Your parent or guardian will contact
your doctor.

Recipe for Protection

Before going outdoors, have an adult spray an insect repellent
on your clothes and shoes.
Stay on the center of trails and paths.  Avoid walking through tall grass.
Ticks do NOT jump or fly.  They may cling to your clothes as you walk by.

Wear proper clothing!
** long pants and long-sleeved shirts
** tuck pant legs into socks or boots
** keep shirts tucked into pants (this keeps ticks from reaching your skin)
** hats and closed shoes
** light colored clothing (makes it easier to see ticks

Check your body and clothing often!
